State and federal governments are ramping up their push for households to switch their hot-water systems from gas to electric heat pumps.

The switch promises cheaper bills for consumers excluding upfront costs.

Energy Efficiency Council Government Relations Advisor Rachael Wilkinson told 6PR Afternoons host Julie-Anne Sprague heat pump hot water systems were two or three times more energy efficient and cost less to run.

“Whether its gas or electric, heat pump water systems are a lot more efficient,” Ms Wilkinson said.
