Spy threat: ASIO boss warns of foreign espionage surge

The boss of Australia’s domestic spy agency has delivered his annual threat assessment, saying dealing with foreign interference is an “unprecedented challenge.”
ASIO director of general security Mike Burgees says plots to harm people in Australia, influence decisions and steal our secrets are more common than ever.
Former intelligence officer of Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at ANU, Clive Williams, says the current digital environment has contributed to the higher risk.
“Social media, people are putting out far more information about themselves than in the past,” Mr Williams said.
