Smoking rates plummet

Millsy & Karl

The number of Australians smoking has dropped to an all-time low, according to new figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The figures found that only 10.7 per cent of adults are smoking daily, a 3.1 per cent drop from 2018.

However, smoking cessation specialist Colin Mendelsohn told Gareth Parker the pandemic has made it hard to compare these figures to other years.

“The trouble with this survey is it’s a special one-off survey during the pandemic, which uses different methodology to other surveys,” he said on 6PR Breakfast.

“It’s hard to really compare the data in this survey to other studies.”
