Should councils mow your verge if you don’t keep it tidy?
Councils have the humble verge in their sights as a cost-saving budget measure, with some planning to abolish their quarterly mowing service.
Canning mayor Patrick Hall told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast there are 35,000 residents across the district and council mows about 20 per cent of their verges, at a cost of $350,000 to ratepayers, which could be spent on other water-wise measures.
“We’re simply just reviewing the policy, and tightening the criteria,” he told Parker.
“Anybody that puts their hand up at the moment would be in line to have their verge mowed, and I think that’s something that is untenable.”
