Should Catherine Birnie be released?

A top Perth lawyer has called for authorities to consider the release of murderer Catherine Birnie, who has been in jail since the 1980s.

She, along with her partner David Birnie, were convicted of four horrific murders and a brutal attack on a fifth victim.

‘The merits of this case are so bad that you would think the starting point is that you should never be released,’ Tom Percy QC told 6PR’s Chris Ilsley.

‘The next starting point has to be in view of the facts – what she’s done in prison, how she has rehabilitated, what she is now, whether she is in a wheelchair, whether she’s demented.

‘We say we still keep her there because [her crimes] were so bad. I think that is an important factor, but not the only factor.’
