Shoppers urged to be patient as WA’s world-first plastic ban begins

Most types of single use plastic including shopping bags, straws, lid containers, food containers and cutlery will be banned in WA as of midnight, 1st of July.
Shoppers have been urged to prepare and to be patient with businesses, ahead of the first stage of the plastics ban kicking off tomorrow.
Dominique Lamb, from National Retail Association told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that consumers are not expected to bear the cost.
“At this point in time, our retailers have been preparing and moving towards this. It is unlikely to be passed onto consumers however there is no doubt that costs are increasing but this is something we know consumers now research what our brands are doing for sustainability and the environment,” she said.
The next stage of further phasing out plastics in WA will begin this October.
“This means other items will be banned at that time. But it is really important for consumers to remember that retailers are getting used to it, this is a change and please be patient in assisting us in making this a smooth transition,” Dominique told Oly.
