The Mundaring Shire is celebrating Alcoa’s decision to cease plans for exploration drilling in the Perth Hills’ unique Jarrah forest.

Shire President Paige McNeill told Perth Today host Simon Beaumont the move follows thousands of community submissions opposing the drilling, but she also urged the state government to review outdated state agreements, including Alcoa’s from 1962.

McNeill stated, “These old agreements just don’t align or comply with environmental legislation and certainly the communities’ expectation around environmental protection today.”
