A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Perth on Tuesday morning after strong winds and drenching rain overnight, with Rottnest Island smashed by 115kmh wind gusts just before 7am.

Since 6pm on Monday night, almost 10mm of rain was recorded in the Perth rain gauge. It brings the total for the month so far to more than 50mm, with the September average 82mm.

WA Bureau of Meteorology’s Jessica Lingard told Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings severe thunderstorms could hit the lower west, including Perth, later this morning.

“More to come over the next couple of hours, we won’t see conditions easing until at least midday,” she said.
