Select nursing HECS debts set to be dramatically subsidised, but ANF say it’s not enough

The State Government has announced nursing and midwifery graduates who work in the regions will receive $12,000 wiped from their HECS-HELP debt in a bid to boost the number of healthcare staff.

However, the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) is calling on the government to subsidise the entire cost of nursing degrees.

ANF State Secretary Janet Reah told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live this is a promising start.

“The government should take a step further and extend the payment to all graduates regardless of where they end up working,” said Ms Reah.

“We’ve got no meaningful movement so far on actually implementing ratios… we need workflow relief. ”
