Following the activation of two new AI cameras on the Mitchell Freeway, more than 600 people have signed a petition urging state parliament to reconsider seatbelt laws.

Thousands of AI-issued fines from new safety cameras have been withdrawn.

WA Seat Belt Advocacy Group coordinator Ross Taylor told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that despite Perth’s 99 per cent seatbelt compliance rate, the cameras picked up 60,000 offences, the majority involving people merely adjusting their sash belt.

“If you’re a driver, the only behavioural change you can make in the future as a result of getting that fine is to monitor your passengers in the front and back seats a lot more often and do you know what that means?”, he said.

“Do they watch the road or do they watch their passengers?”
