Describing the shark attack at Horseshoe Reef, one kilometre from Rottnest, as “horrific”, Sergeant Michael Wear, officer-in-charge of the Rottnest Island police station, told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont about the chaotic scene.

He detailed how friends and emergency services on the narrow jetty desperately attempted to save 38-year-old Steve Mattaboni after he was attacked while returning to his boat.

“A lot of good work was put into it, but unfortunately the outcome is not what we wanted,” he said.
