Victoria Park mayor Karen Vernon has confirmed new waste local laws are now in effect, and people can be fined for having a smelly bin.

‘Oscar The Grouch’ told the John Hughes Rumour File on 6PR Breakfast yesterday that ratepayers are facing fines of $5000 for having smelly bins.

Ms Vernon told co-hosts Oly Peterson and Jenna Clarke on Thursday ratepayers will soon be able to put food and garden organics in their third bin.

“So what’s really important is that the contents of that third bin is just organic material, so there needs to be no level of contamination in there, that’s what makes an organic collection process to work really well,” she said.
