Rising calicivirus resistance in wild rabbits fuels destructive surge

Rabbit numbers are on the rise in the Peel Harvey region, as the biocontrol introduced in 2017 struggles against increasing immunity levels.

Teele Hooper-Woorrell from Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group explained to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that the growing rabbit population is causing structural problems for landowners on both farms and towns.
“We’re telling landholders not to rely on the biocontrols themselves because they’re not as effective as they once were, and you could be working against resistance that are in your population,” she said.
