He had a knack for making runs and now Ricky Ponting is turning his hand to making wines, with the former Australian cricket captain bringing his eponymous range to Perth for this weekend’s Good Food and Wine Show.

Better known for enjoying a few beers after a long day in the field, Ponting says his entry to the celebrity wine game is no gimmick, and West Australians can judge for themselves with the wines on show at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre’s annual foodie event.

Ponting Wines is a venture with Three Kings Merchants, part-owned by former Wallaby and Western Force captain Nathan Sharpe and renowned McLaren Vale winemaker Ben Riggs.

Despite wading into a cluttered category that includes pop star Kylie Minogue and fellow cricket legend Ian Botham, Ponting told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast his love for wine grew after first dating now wife Rianna.

“My background was more of a beer and barbecue upbringing… the journey started when I met my wife (Rianna), she was probably a little bit more refined than me at that stage,” he told Parker.

“We’ve since both been heavily invested and involved in this journey of loving wine, basically, good food and wine.”
