‘Reeling’: Couple stuck in hotel quarantine denied visit to dying mother

A Perth woman has been denied a visit to see her dying mother after WA Health deemed the visit too risky.
Andrea, and her husband Mark, are completing their hotel quarantine at the Pan Pacific – the hotel where a security guard returned a positive COVID-19 test on Wenesday.
Genomic sequencing confirmed the returned positive test was the contagious Omicron strain.
Full statement from WA Health:
“The planned visit was cancelled at short notice due to a risk assessment of the current COVID-19 situation in hotel quarantine at the time. All visits regardless of their approval status are subject to cancellation if there is a risk to the hotel quarantine guest or the WA community. The safety of our guests and community are of paramount importance.
Investigations are still ongoing with regards to the Omicron security guard at the Pan Pacific. Until investigations are complete, no decisions are being made with regards to quarantine periods for guests.”
However, Mark said he and Andrea are “reeling from such a nebulous response”.
“And we’ve pushed back on it, asking for more information, but they won’t tell us anything,” he said on 6PR Mornings.
“The irony is if the original request for what they call modified condition to quarantine in a house … had been granted, none of this would have happened.
“We would have been actually in a safer environment than this hotel.”
