Residents in Mandurah and Dawesville have reported seeing two emu chicks wandering the area over the past week. Sadly, red tape impeded the removal of the birds, and a car struck the pair.

One has died, and the other is injured.

Dean Huxley, WA Wildlife CEO, explained to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that the legislation serves a purpose, but the delay can have consequences.

“We have the resources and capabilities to translocate but we just know that the red tape that’s involved in getting these licenses will often mean that these animals will die or will become injured,” he said.
