Australians purchased over one million new vehicles in 2021, with utes and SUVs making up around 75 per cent of the entire market.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries CEO Tony Weber says the stat “is quite extraordinary”.

“Australians have traditionally driven driven bigger cars,” he said on 6PR Breakfast.

“When I was a kid most parenst had either a Falcon or a Commodore, and they’ve translated into large SUVs.

“I think we always have drive big cars, it’s just the style of the car has evolved.”
