Push to lift uranium mining ban sparks economic optimism in Western Australia

It has been revealed that lifting the ban on uranium mining for export in Western Australia could generate $1 billion in income and create 9,000 jobs.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Economist Aaron Morey told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live, “We’ve been looking at this for around 12 months. We’ve been consulting with government, with industry, with traditional owners. There’s no good reason why Western Australia shouldn’t be tapping into this opportunity.

“We are a mining jurisdiction, we are the expert jurisdiction in the world when it comes to mining, and countries particularly in the northern hemisphere are desperate for uranium because they are turning to nuclear as a source of energy generation.”

“Western Australia, of all places, should be meeting that demand, it’s a missed opportunity for our local economy,” Mr Morey said.
