A Perth pub owner has told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast he has closed the doors to his Port Coogee tavern because he did not want to discriminate against patrons and employees who weren’t fully vaccinated.

The WA government’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate status requirements kicked in on Monday, with The Australian Brewhouse co-owner Aaron Soos and business partner Tanya Cobban deciding to shut up shop indefinitely, only 18 months into the venture.

The sports bar was embroiled in a social media storm after it planned an anti-mandate party on Monday – when WA’s vaccination status mandate was enacted – but Mr Soos told 6PR Breakfast he cancelled it after realising the mandate would be in effect and his business would face fines of up to $500,000.

“Staffing is a big issue… we’ve had staffing issues since day one… now we can’t employ anybody that has been unvaccinated,” he told Parker.

“Well half of our staff is unvaccinated anyway.

“We also have a lot of belief in people’s personal choice. We don’t believe in getting involved in people’s medical background.”
