Negative sentiment against WA Premier Mark McGowan appears to be rising, with reports many West Australians are not complying with restrictions such as wearing masks and QR check-ins.

The backlash comes as the PTA warned it has legal authority to ask people for proof of vaccination and to wear masks on public transport.

Public Transport Authority spokesperson David Hynes said most people were adhering to the requirement to be masked on services.

“The transit officers have got a tough job to do,” he told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

“We made some enquiries with our legal people and transit officers are authorised and entitled to see a medical certificate, and if you don’t have it, and if they’re not satisfied you are not wearing a mask … they can escort you [from the service], or arrest you if necessary.”

Mr Hynes said a couple were recently escorted from a service after refusing to wear a mask and showing transit officers a fake vaccination document. The incident was recorded and posted to social media.
