Police union push for legislative change to assist with pursuits
The WA Police Union are pushing for a change to legislation which would allow them to ram vehicles more easily during pursuits.
As it stands police must get approval from senior officers before completing the tactical maneuver.
They also want appropriate vehicles and training which would allow them to do so.
Mick Kelly, head of the WA Police Union, told 6PR Breakfast officers need more options.
“It’s … a conversation that needs to be had,” he said.
“Operation Regional Shield which has been ongoing on for months now in the Kimberly has actually suppressed the amount of incidents that are occurring across various towns.
“But they’re highly dangerous activities, and in a lot of cases we’ve got very young juveniles behind the wheel of high-powered vehicles.”
