Video footage of a brutal assault has gone viral across social and mainstream media, sparking public outrage after police indicated they require a formal complaint before escalating charges.

Press PLAY to hear detective inspector Gary Butler discuss the investigation into the Ellenbrook assault.

Speaking with 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont, detective inspector Gary Butler of the Midland District Crime Office appealed for calm, emphasising that violence is not the answer.

“We still haven’t got the official complaint, but we’re hopeful that that’s going to occur this morning to allow us to then escalate our action”, Butler said.

Beaumont also interviewed former police superintendent David Parkinson regarding the necessity of an official complaint.

“There are a number of instances where if you’ve got prima facie evidence which is clearly there, that someone’s been assaulted, you can certainly put them before the courts”, Parkinson said.
