‘They’ve got the wrong end of it’: RSLWA urged to reverse Aboriginal flag & Welcome to Country ban

Gary Adshead

The head of the WA RSL denies it’s being disrespectful or shunning Aboriginal culture – by moving to ban Welcome to Country and the Aboriginal flag from ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.

The RSL says it’s consulted with sub-branches over the past six months – with the policy to only allow the Australian – West Australian and New Zealand flags at services.

All content must be presented in English – except the New Zealand anthem.

But CEO John McCourt says the decision is about being more inclusive – not less.

But Veterans Affairs Minister Peter Tinley says it’s the wrong decision – and out of step with community expectations.
