The only Aussie allowed at Covid-19 ‘Ground Zero’

Oliver Peterson

Microbiologist and infectious diseases expert with New South Whales Health Pathology Professor Dominic Dwyer says “it’s easy to see how an outbreak could have occurred” at wet markets in Wuhan.

Professor Dwyer was part of the team that went to Wuhan with the World Health Organisation to investigate the origins of Covid-19. He joined 6PR’s Oliver Peterson on the Perth Live program saying that while the markets are “old fashioned” and “grotty”, that’s likely not the cause but rather “where it exploded”.

“There was probably people wandering around who had mild infection, didn’t go to the hospital, didn’t seek medical advice, who were carrying the virus, some related to the market and others not” says Dwyer.

Professor Dwyer also said its “highly unlikely” that the lab they investigated was the cause of Covid-19.
