Australian doctors are warning urgent action is needed to reduce elective surgery wait times before the situation worsens.

Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows half of all patients were operated on within 41 days, up from 35 days in 2014-15.

Australian Medical Association president Dr Tony Bartone told Oliver Peterson the solution is complex.
