Supermarket Wars: IGA Hilton’s fight for survival

Jamie Burnett

IGA Hilton was left in shock this week when they discovered their location was up for grabs and one of our largest Supermarkets was in talks to redevelop their location.

Gino Divitini took over the supermarket in 2008, providing employment for 80 staff and building a catalogue of products the Hilton community wanted to see on their shelves.

Gino joined us in studio to tell us what his experience had been like for negotiating a new lease and his obvious concern around the news this week,

The location is owned by the Carcione Group and they provided a statement in relation to the development:

“We refer to the Development Application that was lodged to re-develop the current IGA Hilton site at 285 South St Hilton.

The Owners’ positon from the outset was to maintain and continue the relationship with the current Tenant.

The Tenant was kept appraised of the intent to re-develop the site from over 18 months ago. During that time the Owners engaged in lengthy negotiations with the Tenant to keep them at the site.

These negotiations ultimately were unable to reach a mutually satisfactory outcome and as a result the Development Application that has been advertised by the City of Fremantle was lodged.

The Owners are committed to providing the local community with a vibrant and modern retail facility that will meet their supermarket needs.”
