One man in custody over bashing of 84-year-old, second man still on the run

Acting Police Commissioner Gary Dreibergs is dismissing claims there’s gaps in policing with hundreds of his officers tasked to COVID-19 duties.

The Police Union has expressed concern officers on normal duties are being left without backup because other officers are tasked to Operation Tide.

But Acting Commissioner Dreibergs told Gareth Parker on Mornings there’s currently very low rates of burglary and car thefts.

Meanwhile, a man who allegedly bashed an elderly man out the front of his East Cannington home has been arrested.

He’s one of two men who police say attacked an 84-year-old man out the front of his Henry Street property on Sunday night attacking him with a car’s side mirror, and spraying spray paint in his face.

The victim remains in intensive care in hospital.
