Calls for drug use to be treated as health issue rather than criminal issue

A report from a Parliamentary inquiry of cross-party MP’s has called for drug addiction to be treated as a health and social issue – rather than a criminal issue.

The inquiry looked at alternative approaches to dealing with drug use in the community.

It’s made more than 40 recommendations.

Committee Chair Greens MP Alison Xamon says the report looked at how other countries and state’s deal with drug use and addiction – finding the model used in Portugal is the best approach.
