Calls for a tax on superannuation to fund aged care

Oliver Peterson

Welfare advocates are calling for a 15% tax on superannuation earnings to help fund aged care.

In a budget submission, the Australian Council of Social Services argues for a staggered reintroduction of the superannuation tax over the next three years.

Australian Council of Social Services CEO Cassandra Goldie told 6PR’s Oliver Peterson the tax concessions around superannuation have been driving some inequalities in the system.

“We’ve only got about 16% of people over 64 who are contributing any income tax” says Goldie

“Superannuation needs to be about an adequate retirement income, that’s the target for us all, and a critical part of that is funding the aged care system as well”

“You should be able to access these services regardless of the superannuation you’ve been able to communicate”
