Perth’s Pickle District in a pickle with Bunnings development proposal

The Pickle District is an artsy pocket of Perth that has become the hub for many art galleries, design and photography studios, boutique theaters, all nestled between Leederville and Northbridge.

New fears have emerged as the trendy district could be “destroyed” by a $25 million application to build a large-scale Bunnings store, with a childcare centre and retail and hospitality tenancies in a five-story complex.

Pickle District’s Town Team spokesman and artist Jon Denaro told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that the development would be devastating.

“What’s happening is we’ve just started to make it groovy. And as you can imagine, it’s the usual story where industry wants to come and knock it all down,” Mr Denaro said.

“We’ve put our flag in the sand. We want to make a stand because we think this is the perfect place to experiment with the idea for some more accessibility and visibility to the arts. And that is really vital for the cultural ecology here in WA.”
