Perth Zoo’s Asian elephants set to move to their ‘forever home’

The Long Lunch

Planning has commenced to send Perth Zoo’s two Asian Elephants, Permai and Putra Mas, to their ‘forever home’ in South Australia in late 2024.

Permai has been without a mate since the passing of Tricia just over a year ago.

Perth Zoo Acting Executive Director Claire Wright spoke with Julie-anne Sprague on Afternoons and detailed the need for the elephants to have a new matriarch.

“Typically the female elephants gather in a matriarchal herd and so they absolutely need to have other female elephants with them.”
