‘Perth could reinvent itself as the city of starlight’: Backing grows for International Dark Sky Week 2024

Dark Sky Advocates, dedicated to preserving the night sky through education, advocacy, and community science, are receiving support from local governments and regional tourism boards for International Dark Sky Week 2024.

CEO Astro-Tourism WA Carol Redford told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons, “When you go out into our beautiful country areas, the night sky is just amazing, it really comes alive. Although, Perth doesn’t have too bad of a sky, we’re better than a lot of cities around the world. But we can do better.”

“Shielding light is a really great way to reduce light going up into the night sky, it’s wasteful too, so simply putting a shield around the light, you’ll notice a huge difference.”

“If we could shield our streetlights and choose that not so blue light, I think it could make a real difference and Perth could really reinvent itself as the city of starlight,” Ms Redford said.
