Pelvic mesh no ‘quick fix’

For the past decade or so, a pelvic mesh piece has been one of the treatment options for Australian women living with internal prolapse. Now, many of these women are suffering complications.
The mesh was touted as a revolutionary treatment to minimise complications of prolapse caused by childbirth, injury or hysterectomy.
‘Ambassador for Change’ Jaynie Morris told 6PR’s Chris Ilsley the device was approved for use by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in 2003, despite claims controlled trials were needed.
As a victim of the Dow Corning breast implants controversy in the 1990s, Ms Morris shared her views as to whether Australian women fitted with the mesh were unwitting participants in unofficial clinical trials.
