Overseas workers ‘only solution’ to deal with WA’s bumper harvest

Jane Marwick

A bumper harvest is predicted for WA but there’s concerns farmers won’t have the workforce numbers. WA’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Economist says skill shortages “cut right across the board” for the agriculture sector and regional communities.

Aaron Morey told Jane Marwick despite strategies targeting people over east, the only sustainable solution is using overseas workers.

“We can’t access to those people [eastern states residents] because we’re closed off to the east.

“It’s frustrating to hear we have people lined up through the Pacific Labour Scheme but we can’t access them because of those bottle necks in hotel quarantine.”
