Hollywood A-listers and millions of viewers across the world were left speechless after ugly scenes erupted at the Oscars ceremony in Los Angeles.

Actor Will Smith, sitting in the front row, stormed on stage to hit comedian Chris Rock as he presented an award after Rock made a G.I. Jane joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia.

A furious Smith returned to his seat where he then launched a verbal, expletive-laden attack on the stunned comedian during the live broadcast.

Smith later won the best actor Oscar for his role in King Richard soon after the violent outburst. In his puzzling acceptance speech, the actor said “love will make you do crazy things” while the audience clapped him as if nothing had happened earlier.

“Certainly no apology to the man he attacked in front of a packed theatre and global TV audience,” 6PR Mornings host Gareth Parker said.

“Chris Rock is a comedian, it’s his job to poke and prod especially at a Hollywood awards show where the room is full with oversized inflated egos.”

The Academy later announced it would launch a review into Smith’s actions, with some reports saying he could lose his Oscar.
