Oregon introduces bill to ban sale of kangaroo parts

A bill which would ban the sale of kangaroo parts has been introduced in the US state of Oregon.

The bill aims to target sports apparel manufacturers, including Nike — which is the state’s largest employer — who make sporting products including soccer boots from kangaroo leather.

Director of Campaigns at Animal Wellness Action, Scott Beckstead, says the bill was introduced due to Australia’s modelling of kangaroo population estimates being ‘full of mistakes’ as well as concerns over joey deaths.

“To kill 2 million native wildlife for the sake of soccer cleats is something that most Oregonians do not want to support,” Mr Beckstead said on 6PR Breakfast.
