Starting 1 January, retailers will be required to accept cash for essential items like groceries and fuel.

Patricia Sparrow, COTA Australia CEO, spoke to Perth Live host Russell Collett. She stated that cash is legal tender and that the mandate needs to be broadened.

“We have to make sure that our payment systems don’t actually exclude anybody,” she said.
