New research from the Australian Youth Barometer reveals 79% believe they are worse off than their parents, and 85 per cent experienced financial insecurity in the past year.

Professor Lucas Walsh, the Barometer’s lead author from Monash University, explained to Perth Live host Oliver Peterson that the core factors impeding Gen Z are rising cost of living, workforce insecurity, increasing cost of rent, and climate change.

He highlighted the difficult choices they face: “They have to make choices, do I want to eat or do I pay the bill, and that’s why we’re seeing 1 in 5 experiencing food insecurity where they can’t access nutritious, culturally appropriate food,” he said.
