Professor Lucas Walsh, the Barometer’s lead author from Monash University, explained to Perth Live host Oliver Peterson that the core factors impeding Gen Z are rising cost of living, workforce insecurity, increasing cost of rent, and climate change.
He highlighted the difficult choices they face: “They have to make choices, do I want to eat or do I pay the bill, and that’s why we’re seeing 1 in 5 experiencing food insecurity where they can’t access nutritious, culturally appropriate food,” he said.
