New laws allow vehicle confiscation on first offence

The WA Police Minister has told 6PR that intimidating behaviour by hoon drivers will be targeted under new laws announced by the State Government on the weekend.

The new laws will allow the court to order permanent vehicle confiscation on a first offence, if a motorist commits a hoon offence in an active school zone, travels 90kmh or more above the speed limit or commits a hoon offence in a 50kmh or less zone, which could result in harm or distress to a person, or result in property damage, including the road.

Police Minister Liza Harvey has told Gary Adshead on the 6PR Morning Program, mandatory confiscation may be considered if the courts are not ordering confiscation on the first offence.
