National body unveils practical strategies to tackle fuel and living costs
WestCycle, alongside a national coalition of transport and public health organisations, has published nine practical proposals to address volatile fuel prices and ease household budget pressures.
Press PLAY to hear about the proposal.
WestCycle chief executive Wayne Bradshaw told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that because two-thirds of our trips are less than five kilometres, the initiatives offer practical ways to encourage people to make a change.
“Just some practical ideas that give options for people to reduce fuel use and maybe relieve cost-of-living pressures”, he said.
The nine ideas are:
- Crossings and footpaths near schools, shops and stops
- Pop-up bike lanes on key commuter routes
- More frequent public transport services
- Pop-up bus-priority lanes
- Shorter wait times at push-button crossings
- Fuel-saving speed limits
- $100 vouchers for bicycle repairs
- Rapid grants for bike parking and end-of-trip upgrades
- $500 vouchers to buy a bicycle.
