The Opposition believes the government has no choice but to review its proposed nine-month ban on demersal fishing.

The call comes hot on the heels of a petition signed by more 11,000 West Australians, petitioning the McGowan government to re-think its long-term strategic changes it proposes for WA’s fishing industry.

Opposition Fisheries spokesperson Colin De Grussa told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings more data was required on actual fish stocks and what was being caught in WA, particularly in the recreational sector.

“We need to have far better management strategies in place and we actually need to know, accurately, what’s being caught, and we don’t,” he said.
