LONG WAY TO THE TOP: Broome

Day 21/22: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls… we have (almost) endured and survived the road trip of a lifetime, and are on the home stretch, the big smoke is near, the city skyline almost in sight.

We’ve had a ball, and eaten our weight in sausage rolls. And there’s an exciting few days ahead for our final week of broadcasting Millsy at Midday in some of WA and the NT’s most desirable and deserted towns.

Monday’s broadcast was from one of the state’s most famous beaches – Cable Beach. Perched in the lovely resort overlooking the beach made famous by its sunsets and camel rides.

Steve Mills go straight into things, chatting with Sgt Dave Rudd, the acting officer in charge of Broome Police Station and young cadet Andrew Benning.

Millsy’s cheeky producer Andrew Murdoch (picturd with Steve above) somehow wrangled his way to Broome for the final week of the Long Way To The Top tour, convincing the bosses Steve was on his last legs and needed a wingman (we heard Andrew had a hot tip on a horse in the Broome Cup and wanted to collect his winnings in person).

Anyways, the young Murdoch did manage to justify his junket to the beautiful north west tourist mecca by hitting the streets to learn all about the town and what exactly the term ‘Broome time’ means.

Tuesday brought with it more sunshine and another slice of heaven for Steve, who must have felt like he was still dreaming after setting up his broadcast booth at the Broome Turf Club.

Live radio and live horse racing are two of Millsy’s passions, so it was great to see him in his element. A sight to behold at the track were the group of women who decided a second wear of their wedding dresses would be perfect for the races.

Before he left the barriers, he kicked off Tuesday’s program with a chummy chat with Broome Turf Club CEO Paul Rossiter, who discussed everything that’s great about racing in the town.

Sean Cooper then joined Steve for the Everyone’s Got a a Story segment on Millsy at Midday.

Managing owner of Resolute Security Services, the former police officer told Steve how he built his security company from the ground up by himself, and is now based in Broome with 268 staff and counting.

Andrew Murdoch then turned roving reporter for the day, tracking the field at the Broome Cup while Steve Mills was on air, and getting a few tips along the way.

Millsy is on air daily from 12pm to 3pm, capturing the qualities of each town and the people that make them tick, with his journey detailed in his Long Way to the Top tour blog, which we’ll update after each broadcast. This is his last week on the road.

We’ve also got him sending great BTS footage you can see on our socials. What could go wrong? Well, plenty it seems.

Friday’s broadcast is from Derby, before Millsy’s epic Long Way to the Top tour hits its final week on Monday, so follow our socials to keep track with more exclusive footage from the road, and tune in from 12pm-3pm to listen to Millsy at Midday.
