A leading Perth doctor is highlighting concerns shared by health professionals about WA’s new extreme risk border category.

Compassionate travel exemptions for people coming from New South Wales are now barred.

The travel rule means some people needing medical treatment could be banned from entering the state.

Paediatric cardiologist Dr Luigi D’Orsogna said the strict measures have major implications for families going through health struggles.

“As a society and humanity, to remove compassion from a reason to come into Western Australia is just appalling,” he said.

“It’s a terrible mental torture and turmoil for them, and somehow that seems to be acceptable, it’s an outrage.”
