Eagles midfielder Tom McCarthy has defended teammate Harley Reid, dismissing claims the team carries the 21-year-old and suggesting umpires are partly to blame for his record-breaking free-kick count.

Speaking with 6PR Breakfast hosts Karl Langdon and Mick Colliss, McCarthy said the young star is being unfairly targeted.

“I’ve heard a lot more players speak more trash than he does so I think he gets found out a little more than others,” he said.
