Fremantle defender Luke Ryan has described the state of the Optus Stadium surface as “shocking” when the team ran out for training on Tuesday.

It comes after three sporting fixtures were held at the ground last week, including two soccer friendlies between English Premier League clubs.

Heavy rain has also affected the quality of the surface.

Around 1000 square metres has been re-laid in preparation for Friday night’s clash between Fremantle and Melbourne.

“It was shocking,” Ryan told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

“The side where the bench was pretty chopped up, pretty sloshy, like a local footy ground.

“The far side wasn’t too bad, but it needed that patch of grass.”
