Spudshed’s new milk brand has hit the shelves, sparking concern among dairy farmers that the drive for lower prices will negatively impact the state’s dwindling number of local farms.

Michael Partridge, WA Farmers Dairy Council, Brunswick Dairy Farmer, told Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that with only 99 local dairy farms left in WA, the state’s dairy farmers are some of the lowest paid in the country.

“It may be short term gain for people to have cheaper milk on the shelves now, but it will be a long term loss as far as having West Australian fresh milk on the shelves in the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tony Galati, owner of Spudshed, reassured Simon Beaumont that the milk is merely a rebranding and that Spudshed remains committed to supporting West Australian farmers.

“We understand, we know how they feel, we’re in their shoes every day,” he said.
