Local business owner says staff are anxious asking for vaccination status

Today, businesses in WA are legally required to ask customers aged 16 and over for proof of vaccination.
Anyone who ‘intimidates, threatens, or is offensive’ towards businesses who ask for proof of vaccination could be jailed for a year or fined up to $50,000.
Peter Peck from the Liquor Stores Association of WA told 6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett that although the consequence for threatening or intimidating workers is high, staffers aren’t too worried about using it.
“Most people are compliant, and even if they don’t want to get a vaccine, the conversations are usually respectful,” he said.
“We don’t make the rules. We just have to enforce them. If you’ve got a (problem) with it, I totally understand. But arguing with someone behind a counter isn’t going to change the law. If you want to change the law, talk to the government.”

Deb Hallyburton, a local business owner in Busselton who runs three businesses, says that her staff are anxious having to ask customers whether they are vaccinated or not.
“I have a lot of young people that work for me, and they’re not confident in any confrontation,” she told Liam Bartlett.
“It already started last week with the whole mask mandate coming in. A couple of staff members because of people’s reactions to that.”
