AI Ethics researcher and lecturer Rebecca Johnson has warned that the federal government’s new national AI plan, which relies on existing laws instead of AI-specific legislation, is inadequate.

Speaking to Perth Today host Chrissy Morrissy, Johnson cautioned that AI is far outrunning the political framework, and the immediate threat posed by AI agents mixed with deepfakes requires urgent action.

“Trying to use a patchwork framework of laws that were created really for other reasons and trying to use them for what is the most advanced technology the world has ever seen,” she said.
