Labor to put an Australian Republic back on the agenda
Dumping the monarchy in preference for an Australian republic is back on the agenda after the election of the new Albanese Government.
Matt Thistlethwaite was named Assistant Minister for the Republic as part of the Prime Minister’s new cabinet unveiled on Wednesday, and he told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings the Labor party had a long-term commitment in its party platform to work with the public on a move towards a republic.
“I did a couple of interviews during the campaign where we outlined Labor was committed to a referendum on this issue.” he said.
“But our priority in our first term I need to point out will be a voice to Parliament and Indigenous recognition, and hopefully if that’s successful, then the natural step for Australia to take is to look to have one of our own as our head of state.”
