Keep Australia Beautiful’s initiative to reward volunteers for reporting litterers has sparked debate.

Perth Today host Simon Beaumont spoke with Tammy, whose husband is currently challenging a $500 fine in court for allegedly discarding a cigarette butt from his car.

Simon then sought the legal perspective of Tom Percy KC regarding the practice of compensating witnesses for their claims.

Percy stated, “Witnesses are there to give evidence without fear or favour, and if you find that someone is effectively being rewarded for making a complaint, then it casts a different complexion on their evidence.”
